Arthur Vickers
Much of the strength of Northwest Coast Native artist Arthur Vickers' work comes from early life experience and pride in his cultural past. He was born in Vancouver, BC in 1947, to a father of Heiltsuk and Tsimshian heritage and a Canadian mother of British ancestry. Early years were spent in the remote Tsimshian coastal village of Kitkatla in northern B.C., surrounded by some of the most pristine wilderness in the Pacific Northwest. Later, as a young man, Vickers fished the coast with his family from Bella Bella. The haunting beauty of the waters and landscapes of his youth continue to influence and inspire Arthur's art.
From the long, rich traditions of the Heiltsuk and Tsimshian peoples, Arthur has blended respect for tradition with the pursuit of originality. Accomplished in a multiple of disciplines, Arthur's serigraphs, sketches and paintings, have laid the groundwork for his latest gold relief works and 23K gold serigraphs. Whether working with gold or regular inks, Arthur is able to capture mood in his work using subtle color blends and multiple layers of ink. From the subdued gold and gray tones of a moonrise over Clayoquot Sound to a brilliant Mt. Baker sunrise, Vicker's work has become emblematic of the Pacific Northwest.
Created by his hand, rather than a commercial screen printing shop, Arthur brings a remarkable attention to detail to the whole print-making process. His ability to combine a masterful knowledge of serigraphy with the perfection demanded in gold-leafing, have created a truly unique art form. Recognized at auction, and held in private collections world-wide, Arthur's new works in gold have become signature pieces.
